
ETSU Celebrates Black History Month
01.25.2006JOHNSON CITY, TN — Several events are slated at East Tennessee State University.
"York" will be presented Friday, Feb. 10 at 12:45 p.m. in Culp Auditorium. This one-man play by David Casteal covers the life of York, a slave of William Clark and the only black member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The narrative is enriched by original, African-influenced drum rhythms created by Casteal.
The annual Gospel Festival will take place Sunday, Feb. 12 at 3:30 p.m. in Culp Auditorium. Featured will be performances by the ETSU Gospel Choir and choirs from area churches.
"The History of Gospel Music" will be presented Monday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. in Culp Auditorium. Narrated and performed by the Mass Choir of Friendship Baptist Church of Johnson City, this presentation traces gospel music from its African roots to the present. It features the music of Thomas Dorsey, James Cleveland, Edwin Hawkins and Kirk Franklin.
A Dance Showcase will take place Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in Culp Auditorium. This competition features various cultures and styles of dance, including hip-hop, ballet, clogging and more. Categories include small, medium and large groups, with no more than four performances in each category. The overall winner will perform at the annual Unity Fest on April 14. Contestants should visit the Student Organization Resource Center on the lower level of the D.P. Culp University Center to sign up and obtain information packets.
"A Fifty-Year History of Beale Street" will be on display at the Sherrod Library. This exhibit features works by Memphis photographer and newspaper reporter George Hardin, who will also give a lecture on the historical significance of Beale Street (details TBA).
